Ferrari F2008

The Ferrari F2008 is a Formula One motor racing car, which Scuderia Ferrari is using to compete in the 2008 Formula One season.

It is the fifty fourth single-seater built by the Italian team and the design is code named as “659”. The car was unveiled to the public on January 6, 2008.

After winning last years’ Constructer’s Championship, Ferrari made this new car to meet the new regulations of F1. There are quite a few notable changes in the car:

1. Introduction of a new electronic system to be used by all teams, known as SECU (Standard Electronic Control Unit) and produced by MES (McLaren Electronic Systems.)

It removes most of the driver aids used in previous seasons, including engine braking, traction control and electronically assisted starting system.

However it has some benefits as well: It has made management of the differential, engine and gear changes pretty much easier.

2. The wheelbase and weight distribution have been adapted to meet the challenge of the new regulations and on the basis of lessons learned last year in terms of the performance of the Bridgestone tyres.

3. The car also weighs more than last season’s F2007 chassis due to rule changes which includes the gearbox which has to be used for four consecutive races, higher side protection around the drivers helmet etc.

The gearbox casing is produced in carbon, while the transmission continues to be mounted longitudinally.
