Why the TAG Monaco Watch is an Iconic Classic

I’ll admit, I am in love. My love affair with the Tag Monaco watch started some years ago. A friend of mine got engaged, and his fiancee bought him a Tag Heuer Monaco watch. When I saw it I was hooked, with its precision engineering and classic design, from that point on I decided that one day, I would own a Tag Monaco watch. On my 40th birthday I bought myself a black faced, Tag Heuer Monaco with black crocodile strap. Whenever I look at my watch thee is something life affirming for me. So what makes the Tag Heuer Monaco watch so special?

The Monaco watch is based on an original design from TAG Heuer in 1969. What made it stand a part from other watches was its iconic square-case, a first in watchmaking. In addition it is powered by the famous Chronomatic Calibre 11, and was the world’s first automatic chronograph. Add to this the fact that it was worn by Steve McQueen in the movie “Le Mans”. From that moment on the watch was assured a place in the list of classic iconic watches. The original design has little changed over the years, so you know that if you a buying a TAG Monaco watch, you are buying a design that is timeless, which it should be when you make that kind of investment. I know that when I hand down my watch to my son in 20 years, it will be as cool and iconic then as it is now.

TAG Heuer have been making luxury watches for 150 years, and are one of a handful of Swiss Luxury watchmakers with a long prestigious past. During the history they have introduced many new advances in watch making, not least of all the number of firsts represented in the original Monaco design. Even now, the TAG Monaco is the watch that continues to break with tradition and push the realms of luxury watchmaking, as they are breaking with hundreds of years of mechanical watch making principals and intro ducting the first belt driven watch in the Monaco V.4.

The TAG Heuer Monaco comes in a number of designs, and is not just for men. Uma Thurman is the face of the woman’s Monaco watch. My sister, at the same time I bought my watch, also bought a Monaco with diamond surrounded edge. This was a complete coincidence as neither of us knew the other one loved the TAG Monaco. Testament to our independent good taste I like to think.

The basic models in the Monaco range are:

  • Automatic Chronograph
  • Automatic
  • Sixty-Nine
  • LS

Buying a luxury watch like the TAG Monaco watch is a considered choice. You are not just buying a watch, you are buying a piece of precision engineering and classic design. A piece that will be with you all your life, and can be handed down as an heir loom. But from a personal point of view my watch makes a statement about who I am, and is a symbol of where I am in my life. So whether you have a man (or woman) in your life, who you want to make a statement to then you should seriously think about investing in a TAG Heuer Monaco. Whether it is a Fathers Day, Retirement gift, or an engagement present, a TAG Heuer Monaco is a present that will be remembered forever.
